The world of marketing is being transformed by Data and AI
Over the past decade, Growth has become more challenging in a digital world. “Digital Marketing” became necessary as we increasingly work, shop and socialise online, where digital marketplaces determine success. This created a dependence upon digital marketing tools giving Google (and Facebook) a near monopoly on marketing data provision.
Then came Privacy laws, Ad blockers, Cookie blockers and new versions of Apple iOS with user options to block data sharing. The EU launched the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act in addition to the new AI Act. Microsoft also launched a major challenge to the dominance of Google via OpenAI and its search service BingChat to reinvent searching for information.
This gave rise to a new Growth agenda in which Digital Marketing has become essential.
You can no longer rely on third party data collection
Did you notice that most demographic user information in your Google Analytics overview has a warning sign beside it? That’s because Edge, Safari, Firefox and other browsers are blocking the ‘third party’ tracking cookies (and Facebook Pixels)!
This “death of cookies“, forced Google to launch Google Analytics 4 (GA4) which works with back end (server) tracking of sessions and events, instead of front end (browser) cookies. This means you get less reliable user demographic information from GA4 and consequently, you have to collect and manage your own customer data, enticing anonymous traffic to engage and share information with you.
This is driving a shift towards “First party data” collection. This requires that you change your business model to collect the data you need yourself – in an ethically sound manner!
ChatGPT, BingChat and AI are transforming the search for goods and services
When you needed information in the past you would literally ‘Google’ it – but no longer. Microsoft is integrating ChatGPT with its Bing search service in BingChat with the Edge browser to transform the basic search process for information – and revolutionise the world of digital marketing. Users can now Bing it instead of Googling it!
The goal of marketing is no longer just to be on the first page of Google results – users will shift to using generative AI to receive condensed results in a human readable form instead of pages of website links.
Google was taken by surprise but is catching up with Bard and Gemini – its own generative AI tools. This transforms the world of search and of digital marketing.
